Went for a drive yesterday to look at some Volkswagens.. The main reason was to look at an early 70s Karmann Ghia Convertible..

Kinja'd!!!

It turned out to be a 71- from across the barn it looked good, the nose was complete and nice, no rust holes, fenders were straight and in good shape, top was there, glass was good- it even had BC tags.

Thing were looking great until I opened the doors.. Heater channels and support boxes on both sides were completely rusted away.. when both doors were open you could wiggle the car by pushing on the door handle.

So sad, this one needs a complete pan off resto to get it roadworthy again. New rocker supports and heater channels would have to be welded in before the project could even be started - I don’t even know if it would make it home on a towbar as it is.

Karmanns are tricky. It’s easy to sink 356 or 911 money into a full resto, but in the end all you have is a VW.

Beetles are cheap, Porsches are special, KG is somewhere in between..

I had my mind set before we saw it though; Its a vert so if the heater channels are gone I’m walking away.. I would have taken it if it was a coupe with the same rust.
